In life, the iconic Mexican artist Frida Khalo and Diego Rivera had a famously tempestuous relationship.

Having suffered devastating injuries from a bus accident when she was younger, not to mention her husband's ongoing infidelities, Khalo died unhappily in 1954.

But although their relationship has its ups and downs, Diego always loved her, and his final wish was to have his ashes united with Frida's, a wish that his family unfairly denied.

But in today's magical surrealist opera, composer Gabriela Lena Frank and librettist Nilo Cruz provide Frida and Diego with a more satisfying ending.

Mezzo-soprano Isabel Leonard stars as Frida.

When the opera begins, she has been dead for 3 years and exists as a denizen of the underworld.

Baritone Carlos Álvarez is Diego.

He calls out to Frida on Mexico's Day of the Dead hoping to summon her soul as he faces his own mortality.

With today's production, director and choreographer Deborah Colker and designer Jon Bausor have created a dazzling world, an underworld that takes inspiration from the art that Frida and Diego produced in their lifetimes.

Met music director Yannick Nézet-Séguin is ready to go in the pit and whisk us away to Mexico in 1957.

Instead, they created something far more mysterious and magical.

We recently sat down with Gabriela and Nilo, as well as our conductor, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, to talk about the music and the poetry of the opera.

When the idea of doing an opera of Frida and Diego, uh, knocked on my door, I listened to Gabriela's music.

There was one piece that had to do with the Day of the Dead, and I thought that that could be the entry into this opera.

The Day of the Dead in Mexico is a meditation on death, but also on life.

Supposedly, the dead come back to the world, and altars are created, which are called "ofrendas," with pictures of the departed souls, food, candies, anything that the departed loved in life.

The artwork of Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera was so colorful that I remember looking at the libretto going, "Oh, my God," you know?

Do I have the colors that I need as a composer in order to really reflect what their artistic inner lives were like?

There hadn't been a modern painter like Frida.

She added a new element to what we would call Surrealism or even Magic Realism, and so I was coming up with new combinations of sounds, but I had to make the acoustic instruments sound like they were unrecognizable.

Just like Surrealism is a quarter turn from reality, the orchestra had to do the same thing.

Nézet-Séguin: The way of Gabriela to write it is using those exotic instruments in a much more integrated way, and they might not be always in the foreground.

For example, uh, the representation of the flying of the soul, I would say, when the soul just leaves the body and just goes to another world, it's represented a few times in the opera by two piccolos moving together in very small intervals.

♪ It feels like the smoke, mist, something immaterial, but then the celeste is doubling the piccolos.

And celestas look like a small piano that has a keyboard, but it sounds like bells.

There's immediately a percussive aspect that creates its own color and registers for us as something more magical, and that draws to what we know of Frida Kahlo, her way of dressing, her way of painting, and that attention to color.
